Helping learners gain the confidence they need to speak, read, and write in English.

At Kisasa Institute, in partnership with Multicultural Community Family Services (MCFS), our ESL & Adult Literacy Program is designed to help non-native English speakers build strong communication skills for daily life, employment, and community engagement. Our MCFS ESL program aims to build a strong communicative foundation for an individual. Frequently Asked Questions

What is ESL?
ESL stands for English as a Second Language. It refers to the teaching of English to individuals whose first language is not English. ESL programs aim to develop students’ abilities in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English. These programs cater to a diverse range of learners with varying levels of English proficiency and different cultural backgrounds. The goal of ESL instruction is to enable students to communicate effectively in English for academic, professional, and social purposes, facilitating their integration into English-speaking communities.
What is adult literacy?
Adult literacy encompasses the skills needed by adults to understand and use printed and written information to function in society, to achieve one’s goals, and to develop one’s knowledge and potential. This includes reading, writing, numeracy, and often digital literacy skills. Adult literacy programs aim to help individuals who have not acquired these foundational skills or who wish to improve them. These programs are crucial for personal empowerment, economic opportunity, and full participation in community life.
Why is ESL important for immigrants?
ESL is particularly important for immigrants as it provides them with the fundamental communication skills necessary to navigate daily life in an English-speaking country. Proficiency in English facilitates access to employment, education, healthcare, and social services. It also enables immigrants to participate more fully in their communities, build social connections, and advocate for their needs. Acquiring English language skills is a key factor in the successful integration and economic self-sufficiency of immigrants.
How can I improve my adult literacy skills?
Improving adult literacy skills can be achieved through various avenues. Enrolling in adult education classes or literacy programs offered by community centers, libraries, or educational institutions is a common approach. Utilizing online resources, such as websites and apps designed for literacy development, can also be beneficial. Regular practice in reading and writing, even for short periods each day, can significantly improve skills over time. Seeking support from tutors or literacy volunteers can provide personalized guidance and encouragement.
What are some challenges faced by ESL learners?
ESL learners often face a variety of challenges in acquiring English. Language barriers can hinder communication, making everyday tasks and social interactions difficult. Differences in grammar, pronunciation, and idiomatic expressions between their native language and English can be confusing. Cultural differences can also impact learning and communication styles. Additionally, anxiety and a lack of confidence in speaking English can be significant hurdles.
